Lüchun

— Lüchun County, in Red River Prefecture,* five hours south of the Yunnan provincial capital of Kunming and bordering on Vietnam, promised authentic exposure to traditional Hani life, exempt from tourist influences that have turned some of Yunnan’s minority people into performers and “culture vendors.” Lüchun County, population two hundred thousand, is ninety-seven percent Hani, with twenty thousand living in the county town, and the balance in several hundred mountain villages.
