    — To serve a pirog or pirozhki as an appetizer seems an excess to me. With soup or tea—that’s different—or with beer for a Sunday lunch. My reservations notwithstanding, Russians have enthusiastically eaten piroghi and pirozhki as a first course for many years and will no doubt continue to do so forever.
