Spring gave way to summer. At first the heat was intense only in the day and at its worst at noon.Then, as the summer proceeded, the heat began an hour earlier, gradually intensifying at eleven, then at ten, until by eight o'clock the sun was scorching and relentless . From noon till three in the afternoon the heat was blistering , and finally they felt the heat early in the morning shortly after sunup, and it lasted until an hour or more after sundown.Then the earth began to cool gradually. The night breezes were pleasant with the scent of jessamine and wild honeysuckle vines. Throughout the early evening the earth was like a fire banked with ashes; it was nearly midnight before there was real relief.

玛格丽特·沃克(1915—1998)，美国黑人女作家、诗人，出生于亚拉巴马州,当过社会工作者、新闻记者、杂志编辑、大学英语教授。第一部诗集《为了我们的同胞》(For the People ，1942)获耶鲁大学青年诗人奖，一举成名。有长篇历史小说《欢乐》(Jubilee ，1966)，诗集《自由之歌》(1966)，《新的一天的预言家》(Prophets for a New Day ，1970)，《十月的旅程》(October Journey ，1973)等作品。

沃克在教育领域也有所贡献，她曾是杰克逊州立大学的文学教授，并在1949年至1979年间任教于此。1968年，她创立了黑人历史、生活和文化研究所（现为玛格丽特·沃克中心），致力于研究和推广黑人历史与文化。
